Six killed in head-on collision near Lephalale

A man was also killed on the R71 near Magoebaskloof while crossing the road.

LIMPOPO – Six people were killed in a head-on collision involving an Isuzu loading van and a Ford sedan on the R518 road in Lephalale on Saturday night.

Transport media liaison officer Mike Maringa says the driver of the sedan, who had been traveling from Lephalale to Shongwani, allegedy lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the van.

“Five occupants in the sedan, including the driver were killed on impact and the driver of the van was also certified dead on the scene.”

Two passengers who escaped with serious injuries were rushed to the hospital.

Maringa says the department recorded three other fatal accidents in the Mopani District between Friday and Saturday.

The first incident was reported in the Khashani village where a seven-year-old boy was hit by a car. “The operator of a scholar transport vehicle allegedly reversed into the child who had been crossing the road. The child was killed instantly,” Maringa said.

The other two incidents were reported in the Tzaneen area where two men were hit by sedans while crossing the R71 near Magoebaskloof and the R36 road at Mokgolobotho, respectively.

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has called on pedestrians to ensure that they use designated crossing points and avoid walking next to busy roads, especially in the evening.
