[TAKE NOTE] N1 toll fees to increase in March

A round trip from Polokwane to Pretoria will now cost you more from March. We break down the N1 tolls for you:

LIMPOPO – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced an increase in toll tariffs effective from next week Tuesday (March 1).

In a statement, Sanral general communications manager Vusi Mona explained the tariffs are adjusted annually in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as obtained from Statistics South Africa. “The CPI percentage that was applied to determine the new tariffs is 5%, as published in the Government Gazettes of February 11.”

He added that toll monies are used to maintain, operate and improve toll roads to ensure that the roads agency fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to South African citizens.

A number of Limpopo residents make use of the N1 between Polokwane and Pretoria and Polokwane to Musina on a daily basis. The six main toll gates on this route include Nyl, Kranskop, Carousel and Pumulani going south and the Baobab and Capricorn when travelling north. We break down the N1 tolls for you:

Therefore a round trip from Polokwane to Pretoria that would usually cost R368, will now cost motorists R382. From Polokwane to Musina you will pay R205.

In conclusion Mona said economic infrastructure such as the national road network is a precondition for providing basic services such as electricity, water, sanitation, telecommunications and public transport, and it needs to be robust and extensive enough to meet industrial, commercial and household needs.

He added that the agency “sympathises with the South African public considering the current state of the economy”. “The introduction of the adjustments will ensure we can continue to deliver quality roads and services to the benefit of the public. We are counting on the public to support us in this endeavour, because without this key alternative source of funding, we would not be able to carry out some of our major works, he concluded.
