Saving lives is Sabina’s reward

Paramedic and ambulance assistant Sabina Chaba says the most rewarding part of her job is being able to save lives.

POLOKWANE – Sabina, who works for a local ambulance service told Polokwane Observer that her duty is to provide pre-hospital emergency care, treatment and specialised transport for patients with medical emergencies in the community.

She and her colleagues from Protoscape Ambulance Services were on standby at a recent athletic meet at a local school.

They also deal with non-emergency tasks such as hospital admissions, discharges and transfers on a daily basis.

Sabina says she started working in the industry in 2017 but left a year later to further her studies and upgrade her qualifications. However, she couldn’t proceed due to a lack of finances and returned in 2021.

“When I see someone involved in an accident, I take it as my responsibility to save that person’s life by giving them the immediate emergency help they need,” she said.

She added that growing up, she saw several traumatic accidents that motivated and pushed her to join the industry.

When off duty, Sabina carries a fully packed first aid kit that she can use in case of any emergencies.

“This field requires brave people who will be ready to face tragedy at any given time. You need to have a strong heart,” she said.
