Limpopo courts put yet another rapist behind bars

The accused was convicted and sentenced for the rape of two women, one of which he followed home and raped again, the police say.

LIMPOPO – The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has commended the detectives within the Musina Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit whose meticulous investigations led to the successful prosecution and sentencing of a 30-year-old man accused of rape.

Livhuwani Christopher Tshilande was accused of the rape of two women and was sentenced in the Musina Regional Court on Friday (February 4), police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said.

The hefty sentenced emanated from two separate incidents committed during 2016 and 2017, respectively, in the Masisi policing area.

Mojapelo explained that during the trial the court heard how the accused had attacked his first victim in April 30, 2016 and then targeted his second victim just over a year later, in May 21, 2017.

“The first incident happened in Mutele village at about 21:00. It is alleged the victim was walking alone when the accused accosted her and dragged her into the nearby bushes and raped her.” He also robbed her of a cellphone, during the incident, Mojapelo added.

The second incident occurred at Tshivaloni village at about 03:00. “The victim, a 29-year-old woman was in the street when the accused attacked her and then raped her. After the incident he then followed her home, where he broke into her house and raped her for the second time.”

He explained that both cases were reported to the police. The cases were later assigned to Detective Sergeant Mulalo Yvonne Manyuwa from the  Musina Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigations.

“Thorough investigations positively linked the accused to both incidents and he was arrested and charged with two counts of rape, robbery and house robbery with intention to rape. He was found guilty on all the charges and finally sentenced to two life imprisonments for two counts of rape and an additional 23 years for robbery and house breaking with intention to rape,” he concluded.

Last week the Limpopo High Court, division Polokwane sentenced Chrishani Masete (30) to life imprisonment plus and additional 20 years for the rape of two minors, aged 15 and 16, and a 23-year-old woman.
