Limpopo man stabs girlfriend to death

The 47-year-old man is expected to appear in court today (February 7).

LIMPOPO – A 47-year-old man accused of killing Xitshembiso Manganyi (31) is set to make his first appearance in the Malamule Magistrate’s Court today (February 7).

The man, who will face a charge of murder, was arrested on Friday (February 4) after police were notified about an argument in Shitlhelani village.

“The man reportedly visited the victim, believed to be his girlfriend, and an argument ensued. He then produced a knife and stabbed her several times. She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries on arrival,” police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said in a statement.

Mojapelo added that the motive for the murder is unclear but that police investigations are unfolding.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the police for their swift response and urged residents to seek professional assistance when they experience any relationship challenges.

Meanwhile, Social Development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale condemned Manganyi’s murder and said it is disappointing to see people resort to violence if they have challenges in their relationships.

“It is very worrying to find people who still think that they can resort to violence when confronted by challenges in their relationships and families. The incident is a step backwards for government’s endeavours and efforts to stop violence perpetuated against the vulnerable people of society. Gender-based violence and femicide strips away the dignity and the rights of victims,” Rakgoale said and requested the court to not grant the suspect bail.

Departmental spokesperson Witness Tiva added that a team of social workers has been dispatched to the area to provide psychosocial support to the affected parties.
