[LISTEN] ‘Speed kills’ warns transport department

Four people have been killed in three separate incidents on Limpopo's roads this morning.

LIMPOPO – The MEC for Transport, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has called on motorists to reduce their speed on provincial roads.

Her request comes after four people were killed in three separate incidents this morning.

According to a statement by media liaison officer Mike Maringa, the first incident occurred on the R529 road near Mphakane in the Mopani district.

“It is believed that the driver of bakkie lost control of the vehicle and overturned. A 26-year-old passenger was certified dead on the scene, while five passengers sustained serious injuries and six escaped with minor injuries. Preliminary investigations have cited a tyre burst as a possible cause of the accident,” he explained and added that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The second collision was reported on the N1 south in the Waterberg district. “Two people were killed in an incident involving two sedans. It is alleged that one of the drivers was speeding and hit the other sedan’s rear. The driver of the last mentioned sedan lost control and crashed into a bridge. Two passengers, a male and a female, were killed on impact and the driver escaped with serious injuries,” Maringa said.

Reckless and negligent driving has been cited as a possible cause of the collision.

Maringa said the last fatal incident occurred on the D5002 road at Itsani village in the Vhembe district.

“It is alleged that the driver of a sedan was speeding, lost control and hit a tree. The 40-year-old driver, who was alone in the motor vehicle, was certified dead on the scene. Speeding is cited as a possible cause of the accident,” he added.

Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and reduce their speed.
