R71 crash: Injured man rescued from wreckage

A man was treated on the scene and then transported to a hospital in Tzaneen, says ER24's communication officer Russel Meiring.

LIMPOPO – One person was transported to hospital after a heavy motor vehicle crashed on the R71 Magoebaskloof pass on Wednesday evening (January 26).

The incident happened at around 17:30 and the stretch of road between Haenertsburg and Tzaneen is still closed for recovery.

ER24 and provincial emergency services were on the scene.

ER24’s communication officer Russel Meiring said the paramedics arrived on the scene at 18:00 to find a truck “partially down an embankment”.

“The driver of the truck was still trapped inside the cab of the truck and members of ER24 and rescue services had to use specialised rescue equipment to make their way down to the wreckage.”

Meiring said the entrapped man was extricated from the wreckage three hours later.

“The man was assessed the man and found to be in a serious condition. He was treated on the scene and then transported to a private hospital in Tzaneen where he will receive further medical treatment.

The exact cause of the crash will form part of a police investigation.
