Interim EFF Limpopo leaders: ‘No chances, no nonsense’

EFF national leader Julius Malema says leadership of the EFF's interim structure will have a no-nonsense approach.

POLOKWANE – All organisational structures of the EFF in the province have been disbanded by EFF national leader Julius Malema and the Central Command Team (CCT).

The decision to disband branch, regional and provincial structures was taken as a resolution during an EFF annual plenum, which was held between January 22 and 24 in Boksburg where the party, among others, reviewed its performance during the November 1 Local Government Election (LGE).

In an online media briefing that took place after the plenum, Malema said the party was generally satisfied with the national performance that saw an increase of 2.12% from 8.19% in the 2016 LGE to 10.31% in the 2021 LGE.

Limpopo, however, saw a decline of 2.46% after obtaining 16.73% in 2016 to 14.27% last year.

The decline for Limpopo meant that the province lost 22 seats across various municipalities.

According to Malema, the performance of Limpopo during the 2019 national assembly elections was equally worrying but a decision was made at the time to give the leadership another chance.

“The province only managed to get 1 000 more voters in 2019 than in 2016 and it was already an indication that they were stuck. In actual fact we should have disbanded the structures back then but we thought it was not so bad and decided to let it go. Had we intervened, perhaps we would be talking about something else. The numbers are clearly showing a serious decline and as a result, a resolution was taken to disband the structures.”

EFF provincial chairperson Jossey Buthane and leaders of all organisational structures in the province were relieved of their duties by the EFF’s Central Command Team, led by Julius Malema.

Malema says EFF provincial chairperson Jossey Buthane couldn’t be exempted from the process simply because he is a friend and that the EFF won’t fold their arms and not do anything.

An interim structure of national leaders with Mbuyiseni Ndlozi as the convener has been appointed of which former national treasurer general, Lee-Ann Mathys forms part.

The structure will be responsible to recruit members into the organisation and take over any responsibilities of the EFF as well as the appointment of interim leaders in preparation for the regional and provincial assemblies scheduled for later this year.

“The leaders who have been deployed are determined and not lazy. They do not take nonsense from anyone, they will not be bullied or undermined by anyone, including any disgruntled members of the disbanded command teams. No one will take chances with the leadership we are sending there,” Malema said.

Malema says the EFF stands by its decision and is confident that Limpopo will grow back to being one of the biggest support bases for the EFF.

Buthane declined to comment on the matter, including his disbandment, saying any related questions should be forwarded to the party’s national structure.
