Community partners with SAPS to arrest copper cable thieves

The men have been linked to a spate of copper cable robberies and incidents of vandalism in the Seshego area.

POLOKWANE – Three men who were caught with over R3 000 worth of suspected stolen copper cable theft are expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Friday (Janaury 28).

The police, aided by local residents, arrested the men in Ga-Magongoa village in the Mashashane policing area outside Seshego on Wednesday (January 26).

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the suspects are alleged to be part of a group of criminals which have targeted the surrounding communities in recent weeks.

“Police received a tip-off from the community members about the existence of these suspects and quickly reacted. Officials arrived on the scene at 04:30 to find one suspect in the possession of copper cables to the street value of approximately R3 000 and a bolt cutter.”

He said further investigations were conducted which resulted in the identification and arrest of two more suspects.

The suspects, aged between 26 and 30, were charged with possession of suspected stolen properties and damage to infrastructure.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has thanked the community for working with the police in the fight against crime. She further urged the public to continue sharing information about any suspicious activities.
