LIMPOPO – Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has urged motorists to not overload their vehicles with passengers, as well as from driving recklessly.
The MEC’s warning follows the death of three people in two separate incidents last night (January 22).
Media liaison officer Mike Maringa said in a statement that in the first incident, two teens were killed after a bakkie overturned on the D3260 road near Selwane village in the Mopani district.
“A bakkie that transported 23 people from a soccer match overturned. It is believed that the driver of the bakkie lost control and two male passengers, aged between 15 and 17, were killed instantly. The driver and two passengers sustained serious injuries while 19 others escaped with minor injuries,” Maringa explained.
He said the incident is the second reported incident involving an overloaded bakkie this week. Lerule-Ramakhanya warned that law enforcement will impound overloaded vehicles to reduce the “road carnage”.

In a separate incident, a driver of a sedan was killed after his vehicle collided with a bakkie.
“The collision occurred on the N1 north near Mampakuil weighbridge last night and it is reported that the sedan side-swiped with the van. Reckless driving has been cited as a possible cause for both accidents,” Maringa concluded.
