[WATCH] Polokwane’s stray baboon caught on video

A stray baboon, which has made part of the city its home, has been caught on video.

POLOKWANE – A baboon has made itself at home in our city. This was a warning sent out to the community after several sightings of a baboon in the Sterpark and Bendor areas.

Polokwane resident Trudie Olivier Nel provided Review with video footage that was recorded on Sunday (January 16). In the footage you can see a fully grown baboon, suspected to be a male, strolling causally through the backyard of a residence in Bendor. Surprisingly, this primate was scared off by a Yorkshire terrier.

On Monday, Review contacted the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism who confirmed that they are aware of the stray primate. Departmental spokesperson Zaid Kalla said that efforts were being made to manage the situation.

There is a reported infestation of vervet monkeys and baboons in the city and anyone who spots a roaming primate is urged to report the matter immediately to the local LEDET office on 015 293 8300. Alternatively contact the Director of Wildlife Trade and Regulations, Sam Makhubele 082 904 5874/Paulina Moeng on 082 4426688/Azwi Netshiremmbe on 0609841238.

Public cautioned against approaching the baboon

Kalla has warned that the baboon can be dangerous when cornered. He advised parents to ensure that young children and toddlers are in the care of their mothers and/or nannies at all times.

“Doors and windows must be kept closed where the animal is frequently seen. Those who come across the animal must notify the department immediately.”

Residents are further advised not to feed the baboon.

The local community policing forum has also warned residents to not attempt to capture or harm the animal but to instead contact the relevant authorities

This is not the first time a wild animal has been spotted in the city. In 2014 a leopard was spotted at the Coca-Cola Fortune manufacturing plant in Marmer Street, Magna Via.
