Nthateng views the world through a wide-angle lens

Artrepreneur Nthateng Sethemane says photography has always been one of the most powerful tools of communication in the world.

POLOKWANE – Nthateng Sethemane captures beautiful moments.

Nthateng is a 29-year-old photographer from Mankweng but currently resides in Penina Park.

She describes herself as a versatile photographer who refuses to box herself in by focusing on one category of photography. “I’d like to believe that I am a creative individual and I do different types of photography. I also do videography,” she said.

The Boston Media House graduate shared that her love for photography started in college when one of her subjects was photo journalism.

This was propelled by the access to photography equipment. After college, she worked for a communications company that hosted event shows and LGBTIQ+ dialogues.

“I was the photographer and that is where I took photography seriously. I took photos for award shows, concerts, campaigns and conferences. One of the photos I took at the Global LGBTIQ+ Conference was published by The Star newspaper in 2018,” she shared.

She was retrenched in 2020 due to Covid-19. Later that year, she heard from a friend about Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) who wanted people to join their debut programme for funding for starting businesses or existing ones in all nine provinces.

“I took on the opportunity and luckily, I was selected to be part of the programme as one of the participants in Limpopo,” she said.

She was one of the selected 120 emerging artrepreneurs among other creatives in the province.

The programme is supported by The Department of Sport Arts and Culture, partnered with Yoco.

As a result of the pandemic, everything from the sessions to completing assessments had to be done online and in November, she received a certificate of completion for the programme.

Nthateng shared that if she wasn’t a photographer, she would have been a copywriter or entertainment journalist. However, some of her biggest life lessons have come from photography.

“I have learned to be patient with myself in order to adequately work with other people efficiently, professionally and comfortably. Also thinking out-of-the-box by constantly being more creative.

Photography has always been one of the most powerful tools of communication in the world. Hence, they say that a picture is worth a thousand words,” she said.
