N1 north accident: Health MEC mourns loss of EMS worker

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) worker, Direng Bernard Ramarope was one of the victims of the N1 north collision near the Capricorn plaza on New Year's Day.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed her condolences to the family of EMS worker Direng Bernard Ramarope.

Ramarope passed away after the ambulance he was driving collided head-on with sedan on the N1 North near the Capricorn toll plaza on January 1. His assistant, Phophi Eustantia Nemafhohoni sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Limpopo Mediclinic in Polokwane.

The driver and four passengers from the sedan also died on the scene

According to the MEC, Ramarope was attached to the Makhado EMS station with more than 16 years experience and was a qualified immediate life support practitioner and had a medical rescue qualification.

Ramathuba explained that his expertise and ksills in the department are very rare and that his death is a severe blow to the health department.

“What hurt us most is the fact that preliminary reports indicated that the driver of a sedan was attempting to overtake recklessly when he collided head-on with the EMS vehicle… We continue to make a call to drivers to be patient on our roads and observe all the road traffic rules.”

She also sent her condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the incident. She further wished Nemafhohoni a speedy recovery.
