Six low-maintenance plants to add to your garden

Keeping your plants in tip-top shape throughout the year can be difficult. Avid gardener Phineas Mamabolo shares which plants require little to no maintenance.

POLOKWANE – Phineas Mamabolo, is a gardener with over 10 years of experience keeping people’s gardens in tip-top shape. As we break in the new year and its challenges residents tend to be busier than usual and often neglect their gardens.

Phineas shared with Polokwane Review the best plants to have that require little to no maintenance. Here are six such plants.

Peace Lily

This plant is good for those who don’t know how much water to furbish their plants with. These ones grow event when their over-watered and when exposed to the right amount of sunlight, they can produce their spade shaped flowers throughout the year.

Snake Plant

This plant falls under the sansevierias family. It has large leaves that are stiff, sharp and spikey. This plant requires very little water and can die from getting too much water, especially in the winter time.

Paddle Plant

The paddle plant is a succulent that requires bright light; so, it’s best to have them on a window sill where it can take in all the sunrays. It has big leaves with pink tips and don’t require constant watering.

Spider Plant

Spider plants have shoots that grow very fast and they reproduce. They require abundant sunlight and need to be watered weekly. This is plant particularly great because you can replant them elsewhere or even gift to family or friends.

Pinstripe plant

This is nicknamed the prayer plant and produces beautiful leaves. This plant is easy to maintain; it requires a moist environment away from bright light.

Dumb Cane

This plant has large leaves and are usually green with blotches of creamy white. It can grow very large with the right care of filtered light. Don’t put it in direct sunlight, place it in a curtained room.
