Four dead in horror head-on crash near Mookgophong

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety warns of an influx of traffic this week

LIMPOPO – Four people died on impact after a head-on collision along the R101 road on Sunday (December 19).

Mike Maringa, the media liaison officer for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, said the incident happened at around 20:20 near Mookgophong in the Waterberg district. The incident involved a sedan and a bakkie, he confirmed.

“It is alleged a tyre on the sedan burst causing the driver to loose control of the vehicle and collide head-on with the bakkie.”

Four people, including both drivers, were killed on impact while another sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

Meanwhile, in in the Mopani district a head-on collision between a bakkie and a sedan claimed the life on one person. According to Traffic Policing Affairs Limpopo the incident happened along the R36 at around 2:45 on Saturday.

    “One passenger died on scene. The driver and two passengers from the first vehicle were seriously injured, while the driver and passenger from the second vehicle sustained light injuries,” they explained. in a post of Facebook.
     
    MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
     
    Mike added that the province is expecting an influx of traffic along provincial roads this week as holiday makers make their way to their destinations ahead of Christmas.
     
    The province has recorded an increase in fatal accidents and road carnage since Wednesday last week. “This carnage is mostly due to reckless and negligent driving. The number of pedestrians killed by speeding vehicles is also a cause for concern.” he added.
     
    The MEC urged motorists to ensure that their vehicle are roadworthy before they embark on a trip this festive season.
