Private rehab centre on the cards for Seshego

SCACAG chairperson Vincent Kunutu says due to the high number of youths involved in drug addiction and abuse, a private rehabilitation centre would be able to offer a way out for addicts.

POLOKWANE – Eighteen recovering drug addicts from the Seshego area have been given a new lease in life after being taken in by the Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism (SCACAG) group.

The boys have been offered a second chance by being offered mentorship, work to keep them busy and a place to call home. The chairperson, Vincent Kunutu says due to the high number of youths involved in drug addiction and abuse, a private rehabilitation centre would be able to offer a way out for addicts.

“The problem with most state institutions is that they lack the personal, one-on-one interaction with patients. We understand that it may be because of the demand but we want an institution that addresses the individual problems these boys are facing and we feel that a private rehabilitation centre, that will be open for the public, is the best way to go.”

He says since the formation of the group, they have had many parents complaining about their children who depend on drugs and can never stay in rehabilitation long enough. Some of these families, who have given up on their children as they would often terriorise, steal from them and insult them, are thankful to the group for assistance.

Kunutu says the rehabilitation centre is in its planning stages as they felt the best time to act is now.

“Some of the boys approached us while some were brought by their friends who were already in. We fear that soon we might not be able to take care of all of them and are asking the public, businesses and government to assist. Our doors are open for engagement and any help that will see the removal of drug use from our streets will be accepted,” he said.
