New Capricorn District Municipality council elected

Mamedupi Teffo was re-elected as the mayor of the Capricorn District Municipality during a council meeting last Friday.

POLOKWANE – Teffo was initially elected after the resignation of the former mayor, John Mpe who now serves as Polokwane Mayor. Teffo was elected along Maseka Pheed as the first male speaker of the council and Chuene Malebana as the chief whip. In her acceptance speech, Teffo emphasised that council needs to enter a new chapter in an effort to fight poverty.

“This is a chapter in which to unite and pull in one direction. I am pleased that this council term commences at a time when 87% of the district population has access to piped water, 65% of our households has decent sanitation and 96% of our households is connected to the grid. As we are happy with these milestones, we are, however, aware of the overwhelming demand for water by the remaining 13% of the population and we are also aware of the current remaining 35% of households without adequate sanitation, and the rural road network backlog on district roads that lies untarred and unsafe to use.”

Teffo said she gladly accepted the responsibility and pledges to make local government an instrument of progressive change while addressing water supply interruptions and increase access to more people, provide free basic services to the indigent households, build adequate and better equipped fire stations and disaster management centres, create an enabling environment for local economic growth and job creation, accelerate empowerment of special focus groups, fight GBV and strengthen the integrity of government systems to fight corruption.

“Council must deal with how to do things differently, to ensure faster change in our communities knowing full well that history will judge us harshly if we do not take stern action against the slow pace of delivery, laziness and lack of oversight by councillors.”

Teffo has elected a mayoral committee which she believes understands the magnitude of responsibility that lies ahead and are equal to the task of ensuring that indeed we build better communities in this region. She says the team has committed to never abandon the plight of the people, and therefore redouble efforts to meet the expectations of our people in line with our manifesto and all our election commitments.
