#KeepATeenBusy initiative to keep youth off the streets

A group of young Seshego residents started with a project to keep teens busy after school.

POLOKWANE – The group runs an after-school initiative that is free of charge, called #KeepATeenBusy, which is aimed to keep teenagers in Seshego Zone 5 section H off the streets and out of trouble.

Teenagers can join them after school hours where they will be kept busy with activities like dancing, storytelling, board games and academic activities.

Group member Sello Ledwaba explained that the programme started in October with the hope to curb depression, drug abuse and gangsterism among teenagers.

“We saw it fit to establish an after-school programme, which provides different options of activities that encourage participation in sports and art. Currently, the learners are only here on Friday afternoons from 15:00 as a result of exams. We would like them to do well and after-school activities should not be used as a distraction from school work,” he said. Ledwaba, who goes by the name ‘Zay the Great’, offers dance lessons while Maditiro Mphahlele handles storytime for the younger kids with the goal to encourage imagination and creativity.
