Three dead, four critical after collision on N1 south

The collision involved a public transport vehicle and happened along the N1 near Mantsole traffic control centre in the Waterberg district.

POLOKWANE – Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule has sent her condolences to the families of three people who died in a bus collision along the N1 road.

Media liaison officer Mike Maringa said the mini bus was reportedly travelling from Gauteng to Thohoyandou and overturned due to a burst tyre.

“Three people, including the driver, were killed instantly while four other occupants were seriously critically injured and transported to a hospital in Bela-Bela for further medical treatment,” he said.

Lerule has urged public transport operators to check the condition of their vehicles before undertaking a trip. She added that regular vehicle checks can go a long way in ensuring that the amount of road carnage is reduced and lives are saved this festive season.

Meanwhile in the Capricorn district a man in his 40s lost her life after a SUV and light delivery vehicle (LDV) collided.

The incident happened along the Matlala road at around 21:20 on Monday (November 29).

Russel Meiring, the communications officer for ER24 said the paramedics arrived on the scene to find both vehicles in the middle of the road. “Upon closer inspection, medics found a male patient trapped inside the LDV.”

The patient had sustained numerous injuries and had already succumbed to wounds. “He was declared dead on the scene,” Meiring added.

The driver of the SUV escaped unharmed.

Local authorities attended to both incidents. The exact cause of these incidents will form part of police investigations.
