Polokwane Mayor: ‘Water supply issues are a top priority’

Re-elected mayor of Polokwane, John Mpe says the municipality has developed short, medium and long term interventions to curb water supply issues.

POLOKWANE – Mpe spoke after he was re-elected as mayor, unopposed, during the Polokwane Municipality’s inaugural council meeting for the 2021-2025 term at the Ngwako Ramahlodi Indoor Sports Complex in Seshego on Monday.

“During consultations and door-to-door campaigns, our people confirmed that lack of water and the unreliable provision of water is a major challenge. No life can flourish without proper provision of water. The municipality used R37.2m over the past two quarters by providing water using private trucks. This has since been scrapped off and the municipality has managed to procure 35 of its own water tankers,” he said.

The short and medium term interventions include the implementation of available ground water resources in urban complexes and the optimisation and development of ground water resources in rural areas.

“This includes additional purification plants that will be completed by April next year which will include an extra seven mega liters and 12 mega liters from the Seshgeo and Ladanna purification plant. This additional water source will cover the current deficient of 30 mega liters in the city’s supply,” he said.

Mpe thanked those in attendance for voting for and putting their trust in the ANC.

The meeting saw the inauguration and swearing in of 90 councillors from various political parties that managed to get at least one seat and was held outside the council chambers for the first time.

Mpe also thanked all political parties in council for the privilege of being able to work together for a common cause of serving the people.

Mpe admits that a lot still needs to be done to ensure proper governance and finance by building better roads, providing clean, reliable water, proper housing and sanitation, creating more jobs and growing the economy.
