Malamulele SAPS members held at gunpoint

Some members were forced into the back of a police van, while another was ordered to unlock a safe.

LIMPOPO – A 72-hour activation plan has been launched by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, following an incident at the Malamulele Police Station on Sunday evening (November 21).

According to a statement by police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the station was stormed by a group of armed suspects at around 23:00.

“The members were held at gunpoint in the Community Service Centre. Some were forced into the back of a police van while one member was ordered to unlock a safe from which the suspects took R5 rifles, 9mm pistols, shotguns and an undisclosed number of ammunition,” he explained.

Mojapelo said the acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Franscinah Vuma, directed Hadebe into launching the 72-hour activation plan.

“Following the attack on the police station, the group proceeded to a local food outlet and filling station in the vicinity where they robbed the businesses off an undisclosed amount of cash. All role players, including a multidisciplinary team consisting of crime scene experts and specialised units within the SAPS, are combing the scene and are in pursuit of the heavily armed men,” he added.

Mojapelo said services at the police station were temporarily disrupted as a result of the armed robbery. “We can, however, confirm that the police station is now fully functional and accessible to members of the public,” he concluded.
