POLOKWANE – You will not longer exploit our community healthcare workers. This was the message from South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) on behalf of the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) in Limpopo during a march on Thursday (October 21).

In a statement NUPSAW’s provincial secretary Ntata Sekgotha said the march was to highlight the ‘rampant corruption in the Limpopo Department of Health’.

“We demand the exploitation of community health care workers to cease with immediate effect. “The National Department of Health made a commitment years ago to absorb them into permanent employment. But to date, many are still working under temporary contracts earning no more than R3 500, this is despite their work being categorised as essential.”

Sekgotha added that the workers have for over 10 years worked under ‘horrendous and inhumane conditions’.

“They have no access to benefits such as a medical aid, pension fund etc.”

A memorandum of demands was handed to the department and they were given 14 days to respond. Review will unpack these demands in the next printed publication.
