Wheel thieves caught after high-speed vehicle chase along N1

According to provincial police the suspects stole the tyres and wheels off trucks which were parked on farm in the Waterberg district.

LIMPOPO – A group of men are expected to appear in court soon after they were nabbed with 16 stolen truck wheels.

The men, aged between 26 and 64, were arrested in separate operations on Tuesday (October 12), hours after they apparently robbed a business located on a farm in the Bela-Bela policing area, said police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

“It is alleged ten men, one armed with an axe, accosted an on-duty security guard and tied-him up. They then entered the business premises and removed several wheels and tyres from trucks that were parked on the premises.”

He added that a total of 16 wheels and tyres were stolen during the incident.

Authorities were alerted of the incident and a multifaceted team that included members from Bela-Bela, Modimolle, Pienaarsriver police stations, Limpopo Highway Patrol unit and the local CPF was activated.

Mojapleo said two of the suspects were arrested in the area shortly after the robbery. “The remaining eight suspects were arrested later the evening along the N1 south  after a high-speed car chase that also included provincial traffic officers.”

He said all the stolen wheels and tyres, which had been loaded onto three vehicles, were recovered.

The three vehicles were also confiscated, Mojapelo concluded.
