Top FCH teachers excel at National Teaching Awards

Two Flora Park Comprehensive High School teachers, Thabiso William Mathipa and Cecilia Mabunda, represented the school at the National Teaching Awards.

POLOKWANE – Thabiso William Mathipa entered in the excellence in teaching mathematics in the FET category and obtained first place in the province, while Cecilia Mabunda competed in the excellence in secondary school education and obtained second place.

Mathipa previously represented the province in the teaching physical sciences in the FET category.

Despite not making it to the next round, Mabunda expressed content in having been part of the competition and competing against young teachers who have a long future in teaching. She did a presentation in which she showed all the things she has done in her career as a teacher and motivator. In the presentation Mabunda also shared her extensive history of helping learners excel, and she said the panel promised to follow up with her because her contribution to teaching has been outstanding.

Mathipa made it to the national competition which took place on September 14 where he represented the province. “It is due to the hard work that I put in. I like trying new things and challenging myself to grow. When I entered the competition, the main aim was not to win but to network and meet people who inspire and motivate me. Winning is a bonus,” he said.

Mathipa shared that there is an element of pressure as the competition is taxing because of the calibre of people that he has to go up against. He added that it takes courage to stand and be confident in your work. In the national round he competed with eight teachers from other provinces, and had to prepare a presentation for the panel.

His secret weapon going into the round was the passion that he has for his work.

“I love my work and my wish is to see the status quo of the education system change. I want to have a positive influence in the industry and redirect people’s mindset because this is a noble profession and should be kept at that. We need to do it with excellence and reverence. As teachers we stand in the place of God and we need to do justice to the children that God has entrusted us with,” he said.

School principal Joseph Ntsiene Masekela said he is proud of the achievements of the teachers. “All nine provinces took part and our school is represented. By virtue of participating, our school will be known nationally and I encourage other teachers to do the same. I wish Mathipa well and hope that he wins,” he added. The results of the national competition would have been available on Wednesday.
