Residents have their say: Covid-19 vaccine passports

We asked Polokwane residents what they thought about having to carry a vaccine passport.

POLOKWANE – Vaccine passports have sparked much debate on social media with residents left torn on whether such a passport is realistic and fair or not.

Some readers like the idea saying that it would increase the numbers of people being vaccinated, while others felt that they would be unfairly discriminated against for deciding not to be vaccinated.

Adriaan Venter: I agree with the use of the passports and if every business can come together and say no passport no entry then we will be able to defeat this virus faster.
Henri Eksteen: I think it is utter and complete madness and violation of human rights as well as your democratic right. This is absolutely uncalled for, unjustifiable and an act of breaking our very own constitution which is mandated for freedom for all. I am totally shocked and detested.
Lerato Sebe: I think it might work for privately owned businesses and companies. No government institution is allowed to discriminate against any member of the public. Private companies have the right to reserve admission but public institutions are to serve all people.
Andrew Phillips: I do not think this will be practical. How long will it be before someone can create fake passports?
Thapelo Bopape: I think the vaccine passports are not a great idea. They will be discriminatory to the public based on their decision to not vaccinate. Our parents fought hard for the constitution we have. It would be backwards of us to go to a time where certain passports were needed to access certain areas. The government needs to work on motivating people to vaccinate without bullying them.
Susan Maritz Clarke: My opinion in short is that the constitution of SA says that everyone has innate dignity and the right to have that dignity respected and protected. Everyone has the right to life. The ‘passport’ will be illegal and discrimination against my right to choose.
