Superbia incident: ‘The semi-naked man was thrown out a vehicle’

An eyewitness recalls the events leading up to the man's death.

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg police are investigating a case of murder after a man died following an incident of alleged mob justice in the city on Tuesday afternoon. The victim succumbed to his injuries in Nikkel Street between Mangaan and Grobler streets.

Westenburg station commander Col Maimele Pilusa says the body was found with multiple wounds which indicate that the man, whose identity is still unknown, was assaulted before he passed on. Pilusa says they currently have no information on the matter and appeal to the public to come forward with any information.

An eyewitness on the scene who spoke to Polokwane Observer on condition of anonymity, said the man was not assaulted in Nikkel Street but was dropped off there, semi-naked by a taxi.

“The man was thrown out and his jacket was thrown at him. He was limping and visibly in pain. He limped from one side of the road to the other and fell a couple of times. There is still a bit of blood where he fell on the tar.”

The man got to the other side and wore his jacket before sitting down where he eventually passed on before the ambulance arrived, according to the source.

“I heard from other people as well that he had apparently tried to steal something in town but was caught and handed over to the community.”

Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism chairperson Vincent Kunutu says they were alerted about the incident.

“We attended to the call while working with the police. The information we got is that the man was caught stealing on the other side of Nirvana and was assaulted by the community. He was declared dead on the scene.”
