Westenburg cop found guilty of corruption

The former officer extorted money from a complainant who was arrested for dealing in drugs in order to make the docket disappear.

POLOKWANE – A former police officer from the Westenburg policing area has been found guilty on all charges.

The man who was a warrant officer attached to the Westenburg Police Station appeared in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday (September 22) and was convicted for corruption, said Hawks spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke.

Tlabo Ezekiel Maputla (53) was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation members in October for extorting money from the person who was arrested for dealing in drugs in order to make his docket disappear.

According to earlier reports the complainant had previously paid R6 000 but Maputla kept on pestering and demanding more money. The matter was reported to the Hawks and Maputla was arrested in Grobler Street on Tuesday (October 13) after receiving another R5 900 gratification from the complainant.

Maputla is currently out on R5 000 bail and his case has been postponed to November 12 for sentencing, Maluleke concluded.
