Long-overdue road maintenance underway in Seshego

Road issues will be tackled one zone at a time, says ward 37 councillor Martinus Tsiri.

POLOKWANE – Motorists in Seshego say the state of the roads in the area is problematic and they are dissatisfied with the service provided by the Polokwane Municipality.

Resident Thabo Mamabolo says many of the potholes in Seshego are still the result of the hailstorms that occurred in November 2020, which haven’t been fixed yet.

“Seshego has always had a problem with potholes, but they seem to have gotten worse over time. We reported this matter to the municipality countless times but nothing has been done yet.”

Mamabolo says the community of Seshego Zone 3 sought assistance from ward 37 councillor Martinus Tsiri.

Tsiri tells BONUS that part of a councillor’s role is to ‘be the community’s mouthpiece’.

“I make sure to represent the needs of my community. We started to get the potholes filled with the help of Vukhuphile Learner Contractor Project, who will tackle road issues one zone at a time,” he says. The aim of the project is to rehabilitate streets that are no longer in a good condition and Tsiri says its implementation timeframe will be determined once a budget is approved by council.

“This is done once a year by council and is guided by legislation,” he explains.

Streets that are currently under construction include Commodore, Oliver Tambo, Khensani Drive and 68th streets in Zone 3.

Tsiri noted that Zone 2 and other parts of Zone 3 are in urgent need of maintenance, which include areas such as Biko Park, Molepo Park and Thakgalang.

“It is long overdue to service our respected communities and maintain the area. Upgrades on roads from gravel to tar have already started, but there’s still a lot of work to do. We will also make sure that the Polokwane Municipality allocates a higher portion of the budget for maintenance during the next budget adjustment,” he concludes.
