First-year Univen student fatally stabbed in taxi

It is alleged the passengers in the taxi noticed that 20-year-old Kone Nevondo had been stabbed and told the driver to stop.

LIMPOPO – Police in Vuwani are investigating the murder of a 20-year-old student from University of Venda after he was stabbed to death by an unknown suspect in a moving taxi on Friday (September 10).

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said police found Kone Nevondo’s body in a pool of blood in a white Quantam along the R524 public road of Lwamondo-Zwavhavhili village.

“The taxi driver says passengers told him to stop when they noticed Nevondo was stabbed but the area they were in was dark and unsafe to stop in,” he said.

The driver eventually stopped at the Zwikhwengani crossing and said he did not know who stabbed Nevondo, who was certified dead on the scene.

Family spokesperson, Pastor Thivhulawi Nevondo said the family is in mourning and are saddened by Nevondo’s untimely death.

“Kone was a first-year biochemistry student and had a promising future ahead. We are worried because his cellphone and school bag were also stolen during the attack,” he added.

Balanganani Shandukani of the South African National Taxi Council’s (Santaco) Vhembe branch said they are investigating the matter.

“We were surprised to find out that passengers are attacking each other in such a violent manner.

“Our job is to transport commuters safely and we cannot accept passengers who have intentions to commit crimes,” he said.

Dr Bardwell Mufunwaini of the Limpopo-based organisation, Munna Ndi Nnyi (Who is the real man?) said the organisation is worried about the incident and urged people to not resort to violence and murder.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact detective captain Dzivhani on 015 961 7000 or the Crime Stop number on 086 001 0111.
