Son (28) beats mom to death with broomstick

The 28-year-old suspect reportedly attacked his mother during an argument over food, says the NPA

LIMPOPO – While mother and child are supposed to live in harmony and have a good relationship, the community of Matangari-Tshiumoni village outside Thohoyandou are still reeling in shock after the murder of Caroline Tshivhangwaho Khomola (58).

Khomola’s son, Mukhethwa Tshivhase (28) briefly appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on September 7 on a charge of murder after he is said to have killed his mother with a broomstick. Tshivhase apparently complained that his mother had hidden food in her room which was meant for him.

He was remanded in custody and his case postponed to September 29 for formal bail application and for Tshivhase to get a legal representative.

Limpopo Regional spokesperson for the National Public Prosecution (NPA), Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the deceased was asleep when her son came home and demanded food.

“After an argument ensued, the accused got angry and assaulted his mother with a broomstick.”

The mother tried to run away during the attack, but collapsed at the gate, he added.

“She was taken to Donald Fraser hospital where she was certified dead on arrival,” Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that police in Thohoyandou are investigating a case of murder and added that the accused is a past offender.

“The accused was found guilty of attempted murder in 2015 and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

“He was also sentenced to six months imprisonment in 2009 for theft of a motor vehicle in Kagiso in the Gauteng province.”
