[VIDEO] GBV a matter of concern in Limpopo

Community role players continue their fight against gender-based violence and bullying incidents in the province.

MOKOPANE – A number of gender-based violence incidents have been noted in recent months. In May, Social Development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale said GBV and femicide incidents are on the rise in many parts of the province.

At the time she chose to take a stand by leading an anti-bullying and gender-based violence campaign in Thohoyandou, after the area was declared a hotspot for these incidents.

Today (September 14) Rakgoale accompanied by Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya led an Anti-Bullying and GBVF awareness campaign to make people aware that these incidents are common in the province despite many people not taking it seriously.

Social Development spokesperson Witness Tiva said the MECs interacted with various community structures, NPOs and the public as government seeks to find a long lasting solution to the scourge of GBVF and bullying. “The scourge remains prevalent in the Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Mopani districts.”

A similar campaign was held in Mokopane on Monday. The police in Mokopane with the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Community Policing Forum, Community Safety Forum, Y-COP and volunteers from the Victim Support Centre conducted a crime awareness campaign at the Crossing Mall, Mokopane Mall and Shoprite Shopping Centre.

During the campaign, these members distributed 600 pamphlets that contained information about domestic violence with the hope of raising awareness.
