[LISTEN] Young boy killed as speeding vehicle crashes into house, driver arrested

It is alleged the motorist was being pursued by traffic officials at the time of the incident.

LIMPOPO – A 25-year-old motorist faces a charge of culpable homicide after a car crashed into a home outside Tzaneen, killing a seven-year-old child.

The incident happened at around 16:30 on Tuesday (August 31) and according to the media liaison officer for the Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, Mike Maringa, the motorist was reportedly being chased by traffic police when the crash occurred.

“It is reported that three traffic officers were manning a speed check along the D3248 Deerpark road when the said vehicle was clocked at 93km/h in a 60km/h zone.”

A female officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the motorist sped off at ‘a very high speed’. “The officers became suspicious and gave chase,” he said.

Maringa explained the same officers discovered that the fleeing vehicle had crashed into a homestead in Mandlakazi village in the Nwa-Mitwa area and had overturned..

During the incident a seven year-old boy was killed instantly and the motorist was arrested. “A case of culpable homicide is under investigation,” Mike added.

MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent her condolences to the family of the deceased child. “I am disturbed by the incident that led to the death of a child who died as the result of a reckless driver who was reportedly fleeing from authorities. I have been warning drivers about their reckless conduct and for speeding unnecessarily. I want to send my sincere condolences to the family and to assure them that justice will be served.”
