Hawks arrest sisters for fraud, corruption and theft

The sisters reportedly bid for tenders at the Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality using the credentials of a company director who was serving a jail term in prison.

LIMPOPO – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) continue to clamp down on corruption, fraud and theft at local municipalities.

The former supply chain officer of Lepelle Nkumpi Municipality (36) and her 26-year-old accomplice were arrested in Lebowakgomo this morning by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit. The duo face charges of corruption, fraud and theft.

“Between 2018 and 2020, the sisters reportedly bid for tenders at the municipality using the credentials of a company director who was serving a jail term in prison,” Hawks Limpopo spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke said.

He added that the matter was brought to the attention of the Hawks and an investigation ensued.

“It was established that the accomplice is a girlfriend to the director of the company, whose credentials were used. The municipality suffered a loss of about R150 000,” he remarked.

The sisters are expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (September 2).

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on Monday (August 30) arrested 15 officials in a take-down operation that commenced after allegations of corruption and fraud at the Mogalakwena Municipality.
