Murder at Polokwane retirement village: Suspect’s bail application to be heard this week

POLOKWANE –  The case against a 32-year-old man who was arrested for the murder of 80-year-old pensioner Jakkie Grobler will continue in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court this week.

Jakkie Grobler (80) was murdered in her home at the Koraal Aftree Oord on September 21, 2020. The accused Legonya Thamsanqa who hails from Alono village in the Eastern Cape, was arrested on 17 August.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Limpopo spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi earlier said the suspect was at large for almost a year until he was recently apprehended at Krugersdorp in Gauteng, while appearing on a separate case of housebreaking.

He appeared in court on Friday on counts of murder and robbery and the case was postponed to September 3 for bail application. He remains in custody, Malabi-Dzhangi  concluded.

POLOKWANE – The 32-year-old man, who was arrested for the murder of 80-year-old Jakkie Grobler, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today.

Grobler was alone at her home at the Koraal Aftree Oord on September 21, 2020 when an intruder gained access to the premises and attacked and killed her.

“The suspect was at large for almost a year until he was recently apprehended at Krugersdorp in Gauteng, while appearing on a separate case of housebreaking,” said a statement by National Prosecuting Authority Limpopo spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

The man was arrested on Tuesday (August 17).

Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the main hails from Alono village in the Eastern Cape.

“He appeared on a charge of murder and robbery,” she added.

Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi explained that the accused robbed her of her cellphone, laptop, bank cards and R500 cash before he fled from the scene.

‘The case was remanded to August 27 for profiling and the man remains in custody,” she concluded.
