Muslim community helps

Volunteers braved the heat and smoke to ensure they made warm food to those in need

POLOKWANE – The Muslim community in Limpopo in collaboration with Muslims for Humanity and the Polokwane Muslim Welfare Foundation generously contributed towards feeding 3 500 people in Polokwane through the Ashura feeding initiative.

These people were among the 5 000 who were fed across the province on August 19, as part of a nationwide initiative to feed 100 000 people on the day of Ashura.

Ashura is an Islamic holiday that occurs on the 10th day of Muharram which is the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar.

“If you do Allah’s work on this day, he will sort you out for the rest of the year,” explained volunteer Naeem Khan.

The nutritious meals were cooked in 36 degh pots over fire and volunteers distributed them around Polokwane, Westenburg and Seshego.

The food was also distributed in various areas around Limpopo like Mokopane, Bela-Bela, Ga-Chuene and Jane Furse.

Volunteer Yaseen Essa explained that the aim of the initiative was to ensure that they feed everyone who is in need, however, nobody who came to be fed was turned away. He added that the meals they handed out are meals that are prepared with quality ingredients.

“We served food that is good enough to be served at a wedding. We used the best ingredients because we believe that we must feed people food that we would eat ourselves,” he added.
