Vehicle owner sentenced for bribing Hawks official

The man was sentenced in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday (August 23)

POLOKWANE – A 33-year-old man was found guilty of corruption by the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 23 August 2021.

The spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Capt Matimba Maluleke, said the court ordered him to pay R60 000 fine or face five years direct imprisonment half of which is suspended for five years.

Emmanuel Godimo Boroncho, an Ethiopian national, was arrested on September 19 after he attempted to bribe a female official attached to the Hawks Asset Forfeiture Section. “Boroncho approached a lieutenant colonel and asked her to release a vehicle that was caught transporting illicit cigarettes in exchange for R7 500, and he was subsequently arrested.”

Maluleke said Boroncho was out on R500 bail until he was convicted and sentenced.

The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The Hawks provincial head, Maj Genl Thobeka Jozi welcomed the sentence and hailed the lieutenant colonel as a police officer of high integrity. “I am proud that there are still police officials who are incorruptible and willing to fight corruption by all means,” he concluded.
