[LISTEN] Limpopo police sergeant kills wife, takes his own life

Both deceased were find lying in a pool of blood, the police say.

LIMPOPO – The provincial police commissioner, Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe, has condemned an incident where an off duty police official shot and killed his partner before taking his own life.

The incident happened in Vyeboom Phalama village on Sunday (August 22) and according to police reports the officer had shot his wife just after she returned home at around 15:00.

He then tuned the gun on himself.

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo explained that the police received a report about a shooting at a residence in the area. “They arrived on the scene to find a woman and man lying in a pool of blood. Both victims were declared dead on the scene”

The deceased were identified as 42-year-old Shumani Walter Munyai, a police sergeant attached to the Vuwani Police Station and his 28-year-old wife, Ndivhuwo Munyai.

A cases of murder and an inquest have been opened.

[LISTEN] Hadebe condemned the incident saying that members of the police are expected to be at the fore-front in the fight against gender-based violence in the province, not part of the statistics.

“As human beings, forming part of the broader society, they have to lead by example and approach relevant internal and/or external platforms to seek assistance when faced with domestic challenges. There isn’t any justification to solve problem by violent means, which often leads to the loss of lives,” she concluded.
