Big Moss is a barber of note

The 35-year-old is a barber on Grobler Street and his birth name is Moses Mampa.

POLOKWANE – ‘Big Moss’ has great skills and an even greater personality.

Big Moss explained how he often gets queries about his name as he is not big in stature. “I got the name from friends. We threw around ideas for a nickname and ‘Big Moss’ came up and it stuck. The name fits because of my big personality and talkative nature,” he said.

Big Moss has been cutting hair since 2004 and enjoys giving clients a boost of confidence with his hair clippers and trimmers.

He started out watching other barbers do their thing and his fascination grew over time.

“My brother’s friend owned a salon and I would go there and watch what was being done. Sometimes they would let me do the simple things like washing people’s hair,” he shared.

Big Moss said it took him many years to perfect his skill to the point that his clients are mainly referred to him by other satisfied clients. “It has gotten to the point that I compensate people with a free haircut for every three referrals. My clients have been very supportive of my work,” he added.

His affable nature has helped him grow his clientele but he has also taken knocks in his career. He once owned two salons in Gauteng and was thriving.

“I owned these two salons but I was barely making ends meet. I struggled to pay my staff and knew I had to do something,” he explained.

Big Moss took a bold decision to leave it all behind and return home to Polokwane and start afresh. He is grateful to the friends who helped him pick up the pieces.

“They help me get where I am today. One of them even paid my first month’s rent for salon space so that I could get back on my feet. You do not take such people for granted,” he added.

Big Moss now pays the kindness forward by opening his doors to people who would like to learn to cut hair.

“I have an open-door policy. There is nothing more fulfilling than helping someone be able to create employment for themselves,” he said.
