Katuma eager to make a name for himself in the art world

LIMPOPO – Ndivhuwo Kutama has enjoyed drawing from a young age and recently started to build his own brand from scratch.

The 24-year-old artist from Nzhelele Tshirolwe in the Vhembe district is self-taught and eager to make a name for himself in the industry. Kutama creates eye-catching art with pen and paper, and he also works with oil pastel, acrylic paint, and water colours. The up-and-coming artist said that art comes naturally to him.

“I live and breathe art. I make any type of drawing come to life with an expressionist background. I developed my love for art while I was still in high school. My peers used to encourage me to keep drawing because I was good at it. I would find myself glued to my drawings of wrestlers and celebrities during class. My actions started to affect me and my marks dropped. I had to take my schoolwork more seriously,” said Kutama.

He started to take his art seriously again in 2016 and started to draw professionally in 2020.

“Five years ago I started with pencil drawings and entered a few in an arts and culture competition, of which most of them won.

My friend Desire Ramaru introduced me to colour pencil drawings in 2016 and I have not looked back since.

When I met Mainganye of Matongoni Academy last year he introduced me to different type of art such as sculpting, painting, and abstract art. I realised that I was not busy with fine art. I then decided to focus on drawing with charcoal,” he said.

He told CV that he plans to enrol at the University of Johannesburg to refine his skills in art. “I want to specialise in oil paint because oil paint makes a picture look perfect. My dream in the long run is to became a lecturer of arts at a university in a foreign country,” he concluded.
