Four dead as bus and taxi collide on N1 north

Reports suggests that the police were in pursuit of the taxi when the driver lost control of the vehicle, says the department.

LIMPOPO – Four people died and another ten were injured after a minibus taxi and bus collided along the N1 north in the early hour of this morning.

The incident happened at around 05:00 on Friday (July 30) near the Doreen turnoff approximately 17km outside Musina.

According to the media liaison officer for the Department of Transport, Mike Maringa,  the driver of the minibus taxi apparently lost control of the vehicle while being chased by police, and collided with an oncoming bus.

“It is alleged the taxi driver had refused to comply with the request by police to stop. The driver instead drove away and police pursued the vehicle,” Maringa explained

He added that the taxi driver is among the four people who were certified dead on the scene.

“Ten people were injured, two were critically injured, six were treated for minor injuries, while two others escaped with serious injuries.”

The road was closed for over three hours while emergency personnel cleared the scene.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the horrific accident.

LIMPOPO – The N1 north road just after the Boabab toll plaza, direction Musina has been temporarily closed following a fatal bus collision earlier this morning.

According to the spokesperson for the Polokwane Traffic Deparmrent, Kgaugelo Mphago, the incident happened near the at Doreen turnoff and involved a bus and a minibus taxi.

All services are still on the scene and motorists are advised to use alternative Tshipese/Musina (R525) route.

According to reports four people died in the collision. This has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
