Maggie raises money for APD

POLOKWANE -Most non-profit or non-government organisations depend on donations from the public and often hosts fundraisers for this purpose.

For the Association for Persons with Disability (APD) this is also the case. The APD houses and cares for adults with a range of disabilities and has two big fundraising events; the Nappy Run and Casual Day.

Margaret Malatjie, lovingly known as Maggie, is in charge of the fundraising at APD.

“I started working at APD in 2008 as the assistant chef and was later promoted to receptionist. I assisted Johnny Graham who was in charge of the fundraising and after he left, I was appointed in his position. Now I am responsible for all fundraising and awareness campaigns, where I educate people about APD and disabled people.”

The Nappy Run is a fundraiser where people donate nappies and we then hand it out to those who need it.

Casual Day is a national event, but Maggie still organises local awareness campaigns.

“My work is great, I love working with and helping people. It is, however, difficult to raise money now with the Covid-19 restrictions. Companies are not as willing to donate anymore and you need to personally know someone inside the company to be helped.

“I am motivated and passionate about my work. Since I’ve been working here for so long, I know most of the residents and love them like family.”

Maggie is a mother of two and lives in Mankweng from where she travels to work everyday. She studied marketing at Unisa as well as office administration and computing. Before joining APD she also worked at Edcon.
