Six arrested for carjacking outside Giyani

Reports suggest the two female suspects posed as prostitutes and that their male accomplices would rob unsuspecting victims.

LIMPOPO – Police in Malamulele, outside Giyani, have arrested six people following a carjacking incident in the area.

The arrests were made yesterday and included two women and four men between the age of 23 and 33.

According to police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspects are believed to be part of a syndicate and were arrested following an intensive investigation by detectives, following several reports of robberies in the Vhembe and Mopani districts.

“Preliminary police investigations revealed that the two female suspects posed as prostitutes and tricked unsuspecting victims. They would stand on the side of the road and solicit and in the middle of negotiations, their accomplices would emerge from the bushes and rob the victims of their belongings,” his statement read.

He said in the incident which led to their arrests, they attacked a man after he parked his motor vehicle on the road between Giyani and Malamulele.

“The victim was threatened with a knife and the suspects drove away with his Volkswagen Polo. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the bushes around Malamulele,” Mojapelo added.

Seven cellphones, four car keys and one laptop were also recovered.

“The suspects are expected to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 26. They could be linked to similar crimes across the province,” he said.
