Meropa helps on Mandela Day

Sun International donated R275 000 to Rise Against Hunger (RAH) foundation as part of their Mandela Day celebrations.

POLOKWANE – The donation is to help the foundation distribute meals to communities in need, as they face more hardships following the recent riots. Seven Sun International properties joined thousands of people across the world to do their bit to feed local communities in need through their contribution to the foundation.

Meropa Casino and Entertainment World donated R40 000 towards the cause. The total donation of R275 00, raised by the properties and Sun International’s head office will provide 424 boxes that contain 91 584 meals.

“We would usually assist in packaging the food items, however, in keeping with Covid-19 protocol, we will instead distribute boxes to several early childhood development centres this year,” said group socio-economic development manager Heidi Edson.

Rah CEO Brian Nell said that despite the progress made over the last few years, more people will face food insecurity this year compared to the last five years.

“Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and level four restrictions, Rah will not be able to host any meal-packing events. Pre-Covid, the month of July usually accounted for over 40% of our annual meals packaged,” he said.

Nell added that they were unable to engage in any events this year, however, with Sun International’s commitment and dedication to eradicate hunger, Rah was able to pack thousands of meals at their warehouses and distribute them nationally.

“The board and staff thank Sun International for their support to assist us in helping those most vulnerable and destitute during this difficult time,” he concluded.
