Duo bring change to local music industry

Marcus Kganyago and Kyle Apollis are bringing change to the music scene in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – Kganyago founded Lyncus Music Academy in July last year, and the musical aces have now dedicated their time to transferring their knowledge of music.

“Polokwane does not have many music schools. There are just guys teaching here and there, but there are none who teach the variety of music that we do. We teach how to write, read and compose music and want to give residents, especially children, something to do,” explained Apollis.

We offer the people who come here, more than just learning how to play a musical instrument.

“We want to be able to practically assist them beyond playing an instrument if they want to go the extra mile. If they want to pursue music professionally, we also offer grades one to eight for which they will receive certificates. In Gr 1 to 3, we play current songs and make it fun, however, the grades become more technical after that. The certificates they receive are internationally recognised,” explained Kganyago.

The school is growing despite the challenges that come with strict regulations set out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Marketing the school has been a challenge because we cannot physically approach schools and show the learners what our music academy has to offer. We mainly market ourselves through social media at the moment,” added Apollis.

They also take precautions with their lessons and are strict about social distancing. They have 51 learners at the school, of which seven are full-time students. They also have three teachers in their employ and plan to one day start having school concerts once the regulations have eased a bit more.
