POLOKWANE – Close to 3 000 employees of Great North Transport (GNT) who are owned their December bonuses have not received these despite an earlier commitment by the company that it would be paid by April 30.

The bonuses amount to close to R13,2 million, according to Malinge Plaatjie, the national organiser for the Transport Omnibus Workers Union, who explained that they have been engaging with GNT since the beginning of the year.

“We have exhausted all relevant channels including the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). This conduct by GNT is in breach of the contract of employment. We signed a settlement agreement with GNT management that the bonuses would be paid out by no later than the end of April this year and the company has failed to honour the agreement,” he said.

The Media Liaison Officer for GNT, Leo Gama stated that the delay was caused by the company not having been able to secure money to process payment.

“The bonuses will be paid out as soon as GNT is able to secure the funds, he said.

Gama added that the interim Chief Executive Officer, Dr Matata Mokoele has on several occasions clarified that this was the reason for the late payment.
