Suspected liquor thief assaulted, burned alive in Limpopo

The deceased man was accused of stealing liquor from a bottle store in Nkomo village in Giyani.

LIMPOPO – Provincial police commissioner Lt Genl Thembi Hadebe has condemned in the strongest terms, the murder of a young man in the Giyani policing area.

She warned communities to desist from taking the law into their own hands after a mob justice incident in Nkomo village earlier today led to the brutal assault and murder of 32-year-old Jabu Shilubane.

According to police reports the deceased was accused of stealing liquor of a local bottle store the night before and was accosted by his attackers at 10.30.

“It is alleged the angry mob stopped the victim along the road, forced him out of the driver seat and then drove the vehicle to a nearby sportsground where they assaulted him. They later set him and his vehicle alight, and took the suspected stolen liquor,” said police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

Police were alerted to the incident and the man was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical workers.

A case of murder has been opened the police urges anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of those involved, to contact Capt Khazamula Mchabi on 082 729 0343.

The owner of the liquor outlet has since opened a case of business robbery, he concluded.
