POLOKWANE – It was game, set and match for Kgothatso Montjane as she booked her spot in the wheelchair tennis final of this year’s Wimbledon tournament.
Montjane, who was born in Seshego, beat Japan’s Momoko Ohtani 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club on Friday, July 9.
The 35-year-old will face world number one Diede de Groot from The Netherlands in the ladies wheelchair singles final, which is scheduled to take place om Saturday, July 10.
Montjane and her British partner Lucy Shuker earlier beat De Groot and Aniek van Koot, to reach the ladies wheelchair doubles final as well.
They will face Japan’s Yui Kamiji and the United Kingdom’s Jordanne Whiley in the final.
According to Tennis South Africa, Montjane, who is currently ranked fifth in singles and sixth in doubles, is South Africa’s first black woman to reach the singles final at Wimbledon.
