Rugby legend passes away at the age of 86

Rugby legend Nicholaas Hendrik (Boet) Fick will be remembered as a true servant to the game of rugby.

LIMPOPO – Nicholaas Hendrik, affectionately known as Oom Boet Fick, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 86.

Fick was a former member of the SA Rugby Executive Committee and a former president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.

Mark Alexander, the President of SA Rugby in a statement earlier today, said Fick will be remembered as a true servant to the game of rugby.

Oom Boet dedicated a big part of his life to rugby in South Africa.

“Fick first became involved in rugby administration through the club ranks in the erstwhile far north province (Limpopo Blue Bulls) from the early 1970s, before he was elected as president of the Blue Bulls in 2002. He served the union in that capacity for eight years, until 2010, when he was first elected onto the SA Rugby Executive,” reads the statement.

The local rugby league, which was halted earlier this month, was named after Oom Boet.

The statement from SA Rugby added that he was a voice of reason for many years on various rugby committees. “Everyone knew he was always willing and able to assist in any way needed.”

He leaves behind his wife, Janet, and children Magda, Hein, Anel and Klein Hein.
