Avid reader leads the way at CHS

POLOKWANE – Naledi Makgoka is the head girl at Capricorn High School and her favourite subject is Sepedi, which clearly shows in her results.

She won a district award last year and is an avid reader and enjoys African fiction. “In my free time when I am taking a break from schoolwork, I like to read; but not school books. My favourite author is Dudu Busani-Dube,” she said.

Naledi explained that she is quiet and likes to keep to herself, but being appointed as head girl has been a welcome challenge which has pushed her outside of her comfort zone.

“It has been a great experience and it has helped me get out of my shell, because I am shy.

“It also comes with a lot of pressure because I have to look the part and be academically good,” she explained.

She said that this year has been difficult trying to catch up on the time that was lost last year and keep up with this year’s work.

“I am not yet as prepared as I would like to be for the final exams. Right now, I am 70% confident about writing the final exams which is not good enough,” she said.

Naledi emphasised the importance of studying ahead of time and covering as much work as possible before you do it in class so that you also have an idea.

“I have spoken to previous matriculants and they always advise that you must get some rest. I also urge my fellow learners not to be too hard on themselves and do their best because that is all that they can do,” she said.

Naledi added that the one thing that she is going to miss about high school is the support she gets from the teachers.
