9 killed on Limpopo’s roads this weekend

In the latest incident, five people were killed and 15 injured in the Mopani district.

LIMPOPO – The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent her condolences to the families of the deceased, following an incident between Lephephane and Kujwane in the Mopani district.

According to the department’s media liaison officer, Mike Maringa, five people were killed and 15 injured when a bakkie they were travelling in had a burst tyre, lost control, and overturned at around 01:30.

“Five people were certified dead on the scene and the injured were rushed to the nearest hospital. The driver is among the 13 people who escaped with minor injuries while two others are in a critical state,” Maringa explained.

Meanwhile, one person was killed in a collision on the R521 next to Wildebeeskrale farm in the Vhembe district on Friday (June 11).

“A sedan and a truck collided. It is believed that the one driver was driving recklessly into oncoming traffic,” Maringa told Review.

The 30-year-old driver of the sedan and one 45-year-old female passenger died.

“This brings the total number of people killed on Limpopo’s roads this weekend, to nine. The MEC has cautioned motorists who continue to drive at a high speeds, to not do so as they mostly lead to fatal accidents. MEC Lerule-Ramakhanya has also noted that most of the accidents reported over the weekend happened during curfew hours,” Maringa concluded.
